Some live-action adaptation discussion...
« on: January 18, 2009, 04:03:29 PM »
Alright, here's an idea for everyone.  Hopefully, it'll spur some discussion.  Like at least three posts of it.  >_>

Recently, there's been a ton of American live-action adaptations of anime.  A few are out, some are in the process of being made and some, we've heard new about in the last few years.

For example, there was the very odd Speedracer movie.  I've never seen the anime so I have no opinion on how it was adapted, except that the movie was really weird and not too enjoyable.

Then there are movies that will come out sometime soon.  One is the Astroboy movie.  I know quite a few fans of that.  Also there will be a *snigger* Dragonball movie.  That already has a trailer out, which is either funny to watch or makes you want to burst into tears for how horrible it looks.

Then there's the movies that we haven't heard a peep about in a long time.  Akira and the Evangelion movie are the ones that come to mind.

So, any opinions?  Seen any trailer?  Any other movies you know about?  Here's some random thoughts of mine.

-Piccolo is green but Bulma's hair is not blue...
-Ahaha, white Goku.
-Ahaha, Master Roshi that looks like my neighbor in a Hawaiian shirt.
-Um, Keanu Reeves...as Spike...in Cowboy Bebop.  I worry for Spike but lots of the people who did Cowboy Bebop will be working on the live-action as well...  So maybe not fail?

I don't know much about the live actions adaptations.

However I'm a huge fan of Bebop. They better not butcher it or I will seriously chop some heads off.  >:(

Also DiCaprio is directing the Akira film I believe it was. I think he needs to pull a miracle to really pull a masterpiece like that off into live action.

Temp sig set from a long time ago, only until I get around to making a new one. Been ages.

Never trust Wikipedia but it says Dicaprio would be producing the film, along with two other people.  Would they have to Americanize the movie?  Neo-New York?  I guess they can't really change Akira(the character)'s name since the whole title would change.  Well, maybe it'll come out in a few years and we'll see Kaneda bikes being sold.  That'd be awesome...

I get all my information from IMDB. Very trustworthy site.

Dicaprio is indeed producing it. However, I can't see any way the story can be retold that could equal or be better than the anime version.

Also i've been hearing Dicaprio might also play in a role in the film.

Bebop isn't due out until 2011, so there's not much info on it at this point.

Knowing its hollywood its best to expect changes, however I hear as well that Dicaprio is somewhat of an anime fan as well. If thats true we might have a chance to actually see a live action thats true to the anime counterpart.

Honestly, I highly doubt that any live-action adaptation of an anime would ever be very good, that is any anime or manga that is based off of the story. Live-action adaptations of an action or fighting type anime could be done well since the story is not as important.
The reason I think that is that look how many changes occur when a manga turns into an anime and that is only when it is turned into another form of animation. Even if the live action adaptation is not very good it will still sell quite well as each one mentioned so far have solid fanbases.

Well, if that is why you want to see them then you would most likely get your wish. Deep down though I hope they do a fairly good job. Does not have to be amazing but just decent.

Well, the good thing about going into a movie expecting the worst is that there won't be disappointment.  If it actually ends up good, then yay.  If I expect the best, chances are high that the movie will suck.

Optimistic pessimism?

lol. Even though that is a little odd it does sound perfectly reasonable.
Unless of course it is so bad that it is even lower than your worst expectations. ^_^

I dunno...that's pretty difficult to do.  My expectations are pretty low...  Like almost six feet under me low.

Difficult but not impossible. Though for me it is video games and not movies and that type of thing.

Hmm, don't play too many video games.  I like the Resident Evil movies...

Well, for myself the game I bought I thought it would be fairly bad but I did not have that much of a choice. But then I played it and I nearly died from how bad it was. Though it was strangely addicting and one nice enough song.

The Resident Evil movies, and games, were actually very good.

I've never actually played the RE games.  I get scared pretty easily so I can only watch.  I hate the tension of waiting for something to pop out when playing games.  >_>
