This has been a big subject for many music fans...just wondering what your thoughts are.

I've always loved Metallica. I like the way they portray emotion not only through lyrics, but through the music, which is something very few bands (in my opinion) can do efficiently.
Thanks to Chaos for the siggy!!!

Well, I don't want the world to see me,
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand.
When everything's made to be broken,
I just want you to know who I am...

i agree, but i think the musicality went down the drain after the black album, and i have no idea why.

I've always respected Metallica. They're amazing. Unfortunately, I have to admit that they did get worse. I'm still a huge fan, but they've been better.

sort of...some of them cleaned up but to a slight degree, meaning they drank but drank less, etc.  james didn't quit drinking until during the recording of st anger, in which he went into rehab.  also, something i noticed from watching some kind of monster is that they used a different technique when writing songs.  during the "black album and before" era,  each person wrote their own part and they didn't give input on what they thought each other should play, while after the black album, they would give input to each other on what they thought each other's instruments should be playing and what they should sound like.  the latter sounds like a better idea but it didn't come out that way in their music...maybe when they would write their own parts they could put all their energy into themselves instead of wasting it on the other members.
