Because in Spears case, she gains millions of fans.  As for Michael, he is a sick freak.  Most people try to change to appease others.

Well, people either hate the way they look, or they change their profiles to impress others. Michael Jackson looked better black than what he looks like now. Mike, chop off the shitty nose!

Some change without realizing.  Some change to fit in with others.  It's an inevitable process that most, if not all go through.

I mean don't they lie when they change??? You may not like the way you look but that doesn't mean you don't have a great personality i mean i dont like the way i look but i love who i am. If everyone changed something the whole world would be one big lie right?? i think it would just be one big lie

As long as you are popular, some people just wouldn't care.  Just because you feel one way doesn't mean someone else will feel the same way.

A famous psychologist (whose name escapes me) said: we are who we believe others see us as. I think that's fundamental (if a bit sad). We rely on feedback from others to shape our behavior. This is a common learning tool among animals. However, as self-aware creatures, we humans take it to the next level. Just think about your most formative years (social speaking) qua homo; that is to say, adolescence. Think of the tremendous social pressures faced by teens-that's when you see the majority of social-related illness, right?
I think superstars are an excellent example, Waya and Blonde. They become whom they think their fans want them to be. I'm sure a lot of it is financial. However, I think the tremendous pressure leads to a very unhealthy self-image. Michael Jackson is the exemplar for this. He admittedly has low self esteem, a surgery addiction, and (I would argue) more deep seated emotional probs.
OHHH, The Drama!

People change when they get bored of themselves and want new attention.

Sometimes change is needed and can be a good thing.  Like a change of habits, or change of behaviors.

But I don't think you are heading in that direction with this discussion.  Happy is right.  Especially in adolescence, this is for the most part, teens want to fit in and be liked.  And how to do that in this materialistic/consumer-filled culture?  Be the hottest person around.  Be the person with the most kick ass gear.  You name it.  We are all branded.  That is why people sometimes change for the worst.  It is because we are branded.  To get either more attention and/or more money.

Change is the nature of existance, nothing is without change.

Or people just want to find happiness in a horrifying and materialistic culture.
