I don't look at what I type. I don't claaim to have perfect spelling / grammar either, nor could I with this 333mhz iMac's keyboard. The ironic thing is, this was the computer I dreamt of owning... IN 3RD GRADE

Well, it can barely run AIM and IE at the same time. The keyboard responds to what i type by either:

1) having it appear on the screen 2 minutes later, or
2) just completely ignoring it

it does the above two at whenever it wants, making half of what I type on AIM illegible.
Shut the fuck up.

I think Judau was referring to the members who have been here a while. They are senior in their knowledge and experience here. I don't think they are "senior" in the sense that they are better than anyone else. They should be helping the newbs and running this place by creating the right environment. A mod is important, but shouldn't need to get personally involved in every thread to keep things running.

Exactly... although I would also, to an extant, incorperate fairly new members that have been on many boards in the past... you know, not board newbies, just a newbie to THIS particular board. They can still have good points, if not even better points because they come from a different background than most everyone else who has been on a board for ages together.

Creating the "right environment" is a bit difficult when the forum turns itself into a teen agony aunt.  I appreciate that Fonzy thinks that there is an optimum amount of teen angst on a BBS to make it work, but sometimes you can be driven to fits of vomiting, or at least I can.

Though, I suppose that certain members do have a responsibility toward the smooth running of the board.

At any rate, JT fell apart because of divisions between senior members and the admin; a lack of trust was the cause of its previous downfall.

That would be very difficult to do...maybe we could achieve something near enough to that idea. At least we don't have a division like they did so we should last awhile. But also another problem might have been having so many members with conflicting ideas. Of course we couldn't change that.

You know that when a member says that if you possibly HAVE a girlfriend, you are lucky to have one, that it is a pretty personal blow.  The new users need to learn some respect.  You can mess with someone about their love life if they are peers, but if it is an admin, I would NOT recommend it.

Ya I agree that noobs can make dumb posts but that is usually in ignorance, not stupidity. Though there are a few that do it out of stupidity. Instead of thinking of them as stupid maybe you could find common ground hopefully. Remember we were once noobs.

You can tell how a person is by the way they write and the way they make snappy remarks. For noobs, stupidity shines through them first.

Swim upsteam, for the beginning starts there.

The biggest conflict here is intelligence and stupidity

Ironic, I thought it was elitism that make BBSs hard places for new people to settle in. ^_~

Dropping the quip, that's not a helpful attitude to take.  There will always be people of a lesser intelligence, treating like they are stupid is not going to solve anything.  Unless, of course, you find some sordid pleasure from demeaning others.  In that case, you will just be hastening the demise.

Outright complaints about poor grammar and spelling are not going to make people better posters.  It only serves to make the poster feel inadequate.  You will not be able to have a forum where everyone posts correctly.  Our esteemed Music mod is a lovely example: one day she'll capitalise her posts.

So what can be done?  Not much, only tolerance.

Waya, it works both ways.  Anyone that has something that marks the out as "staff" have a greater responsibility to maintain their composure and maturity.  No one is going to flame a mod about their personal life unless the mod provokes them.  Yes, I'm being unfair toward the mods and admins, but the perks come at a cost.

Finally, pay attention to Fonzy.  There are many pearls of wisdom hidden in his posts.
